Fairfax County, Va. – As Fairfax County’s climate changes, becoming warmer, wetter and weirder, it is imperative for residents to prepare and adjust. With Flood Awareness Week kicking off this coming weekend, running from March 10 -16, now is a good time to find out what you need to do to protect your property, your loved ones and yourself.
Key messages during Flood Awareness Week are:
- Know your risk, prepare an emergency kit, and formulate a plan in the event of an emergency.
- Find out if you live in a flood plain or other flood prone area using the county Flood Risk Awareness Tool, and prepare accordingly, including purchasing flood insurance.
- Do not drive through flooded roads. Turn Around Don’t Drown
- Subscribe to Fairfax Alerts for information before, during and after flooding and other emergency events https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/alerts
- Those in low-lying, flood prone areas such as Belle View, New Alexandria and Huntington also should subscribe to Riverwatch Alerts and other custom alerts in the My Subscriptions tab on their Fairfax Alerts account.
On Wednesday, March 6 at 7 p.m. during the Department of Emergency Management and Safety (DEMS) monthly webinar, the Department of Public Works and Environmental Services and DEMS will discuss Flood Resiliency in Fairfax County.
