Current Studies

On July 31, 2018, the Board of Supervisors authorized the consideration of Site Specific Plan Amendment (SSPA 2018-I-1MS) within the Merrifield Suburban Center. The Board approved the Plan amendment on Sept. 24, 2019, with recommendations from the community task force adopting six follow-on motions.

In response to Follow-On Motions #1 to #4, the Fairfax County Department of Transportation intends to conduct a multimodal analysis for the transportation improvements recommended in the Plan Amendment. The study began at the end of 2022 and the anticipated completion is Fall 2024. The first round of outreach is planned for Fall 2023.

The study will focus on the Gallows Road corridor from Tysons to greater Annandale, as well as some parallel roadways, such as Eskridge Road. The study will also look at barriers to connectivity created by I-495 and recommend opportunities for improvement. A Vision Statement will be developed with the community and stakeholders along the corridor, which will help guide the design and functionality of the corridor.

The study identifies intersection improvements that enhance the intersection operations and increase capacity, specifically through Silverbrook Road’s southbound left-turn movement and Lorton Road’s westbound right-turn movement. In addition, the goal of the study is to address any safety or operational deficiencies found through the existing conditions analysis and address any other modes of transportation needs.

The Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT) is conducting a study on the Route 29 corridor, between Buckleys Gate Drive/Summit Drive near the Fairfax County Parkway (VA 286) and Jermantown Road. The purpose of this study is to reassess the long-term needs of the corridor and develop solutions that serve residents and commuters, while moving away from the interchanges that are identified in the current Fairfax County Comprehensive Transportation Plan (CTP).

As part of the Tysons Neighborhood Study, FCDOT identified the need to improve the Spring Hill Road and Lewinsville Road signalized intersection. The intersection has a severely skewed intersection angle, and experiences peak hour congestion, significant cut-through traffic, long queues, and has a documented crash history. The proximity to Spring Hill Elementary School is another contributing factor to the recurring congestion and significant queue spillbacks from the intersection. A previous study of this intersection, also part of the Tysons Neighborhood Study, looked at enhancements to the existing signalized intersection operations as well as several roundabout configurations.

FCDOT is conducting a multimodal corridor study of Wiehle Avenue from Sunrise Valley Drive to the Washington and Old Dominion Trail. This study originated from a Follow-On Motion authorized by the Board of Supervisors in response to the approval of the Campus Commons zoning application (RZ/FDP 2017-HM-018 and PCA 79-C-023).
