Project No. – SD-000031-214
Project Engineer – Joe Gerges
Contractor – Avon Corporation
Location – Hunter Mill District
Scope - Project consists of the restoration of approximately 4,468 linear along two unnamed tributaries to Colvin Run within Lake Fairfax Park in Fairfax County, Virginia. The existing channels have varying depth, with channel incision and undercut banks. The project will reestablish a stable natural flooding regime, placing a reinforced bed where necessary to prevent future incision, installing rock structures for stabilization of the bed and banks as well as energy dissipation and bank protection. Reach 1 will be restored using debris jams and beaver dam analogs, sourced from varying sizes of on-site woody material, and installed within the existing channel without realignment and bank grading. Floodplain-wide grade control structures will be strategically placed to inhibit floodplain erosion while several structures with clay cores will be present to further encourage backwatering.
