Where Does Recycling Go Poster~Coincides with America Recycles Day~

The County will celebrate Fairfax Recycles Day on November 15, which is the same day as the national “America Recycles Day”. Recycling is an integral part of the County’s ambitious Zero Waste Plan, which aims to divert 90% of waste from disposal and reduce the overall waste generated by 25% by 2040.

As we recognize the day, the Fairfax County Solid Waste Management Program continues to encourage residents to take part in the following recycling initiatives - if they aren’t doing so already!

  • Glass Recycling - Glass can be recycled in purple bins throughout the County. One hundred percent of the glass collected through the Purple Can Club is recycled into new glass materials.
  • Composting - Food waste makes up as much as one-third of the trash we dispose of every day in Fairfax County. Save your food scraps and compost them at the I-95 Landfill Complex in Lorton and the I-66 Transfer Station in Fairfax or take them to any of the 10 Park Authority Farmer’s Markets (check their calendar for months of operation). Or you can always build your own compost tumbler in your backyard!

On Tuesday, November 21, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. the public can stop by 12000 Government Center Parkway to learn more about Fairfax County recycling and zero waste programs. County Solid Waste Management Program staff will be available to answer your questions and provide resources. There will be a zero-waste themed giveaway and an opportunity to see the County’s new all-electric trash truck.

We also will recognize those who completed our 4Touch Points Initiative survey. Respondents will be listed and thanked on our Fairfax Recycles Day webpage the week of November 13, 2023.

When we reduce, reuse and recycle our trash, we lessen our environmental impact. Increasing recycling means fewer items end up in landfills, which helps conserve energy, decreases air and water pollution, maintains our natural resources, and reduces greenhouse gases.
