Health Department Joins County Partners at New Sully Community Center Opening

The grand opening of the new Sully Community Center in Herndon featured a wide variety of public and community health programs that aim to connect residents to more health and nutrition services.

HealthWorks for Northern Virginia, serving as a medical home to thousands in the region, will occupy a 4,000 square foot space at the center. The federally qualified health center offers low-cost primary health care services and helps patients address barriers to leading healthy lives.

The Fairfax County Health Department’s Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children program (WIC) also has space in the Sully Community Center. WIC provides pregnant, postpartum, and breastfeeding woman, as well as infants and children under five, with supplemental nutritious food, nutrition education and breastfeeding support. Health Department community partner Western Fairfax Christian Ministries keep will the WIC pantry stocked with healthy foods, as will the center’s new community center garden.

“The new community center is aligned with the vision of the Fairfax County Health Department – healthy people in healthy communities,” said Dr. Gloria Addo-Ayensu, health director, Fairfax County Health Department. “Building healthy communities means we must engage with people where they are living, working and playing to promote healthy behaviors and healthy environments.”

The grand opening also featured the Fairfax County Health Department’s community partner Stronger2, that focuses on expanding health literacy to increase resilience among communities of color. Stronger2 representatives from Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. were on site and shared information on COVID-19 vaccines and other vital health topics.

Personnel from the Health Department’s Disease Carrying Insects Program provided attendees with tutorials on how to keep your yard tick and mosquito-free and other ways to prevent insect bites. Fairfax County Health Department staff from the Outreach Team were also on site, connecting many connect community members with local health resources and information.
