1,000 books sounds like a lot, so here are just five reasons why the Fairfax County Public Library recently launched its 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program.

1. Reading Skills are Essential to Success in School

2. It’s an Achievable Goal

  • Reading unique titles or a child’s favorite book multiple times all count toward the 1,000 goal. Infants and children like repetition! Hearing books at storytimes also counts to the 1,000 book goal.
  • The Library’s Early Literacy Outreach program provides resources to preschoolers, parents and caregivers in child care centers and many other non-library location countywide.
  • The Library has a full calendar of fun reading events for young children and a children’s reading section at the library branch closest to you.

3. You Win Prizes!

Yes, it’s true! Keep track of the number of books you and your child read and you will receive prizes. Here is how it works:

  • Once your child has heard 25 books, sign him or her up at any Fairfax County Public Library branch and receive a packet of information with reading logs.
  • Any child who hasn’t entered kindergarten yet is eligible for the program, including infants.
  • Track your reading. When you reach the milestones below, return to any Fairfax County Public Library branch to receive a prize:
    • 100 books
    • 250 books
    • 500 books
    • 750 books
    • 1,000 books

4. There’s an App (of course)

Busy parents and kids on the go can use the national 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program’s mobile app on your smart phone or pad.

5. Your Family Will Find New Books to Love

Get out of your Good Night Moon or Hop on Pop slump and explore new books to read. The Library provides information on books for babies and toddlers and books for preschoolers.
