Hundreds of residents joined county officials and local leaders on April 11 to celebrate the opening of our newest facility, designed to bring the services of the Kingstowne area together in one place. Franconia District Supervisor Rodney Lusk welcomed the overflowing crowd to the ribbon cutting ceremony for the Franconia District Governmental Center, noting his excitement about this project finally coming to fruition.
“Located in the heart of the Franconia District, this facility will serve as a “one-stop shop” for essential services for residents,” Lusk said. “Community members will be able to access my office, the police department, library services, childcare, adult resources and the Franconia Museum—all without ever leaving the building.
About the Franconia District Governmental Center
County services in the Kingstowne area of Alexandria were scattered and facilities were small and outdated. To answer these concerns, construction began in early 2023 on a new building that would bring dedicated space, along with modern amenities and dedicated parking, to serve the residents of Franconia.
The new government center houses the Franconia Police Station, the Franconia District Supervisor’s Office and the Franconia Museum, along with an Active Adult Center and a new childcare center that offers care for infants through pre-kindergarten age children. Additionally, the entire top floor is dedicated to the newly expanded Kingstowne Regional Library.
The building was constructed on a vacant county-owned site between Beulah Street, Silver Lake Boulevard and Interparcel Road, just south of Manchester Boulevard in the heart of the Kinsgtowne area of Alexandria. It is convenient for direct access from the residential neighborhood, the adjacent elementary school and nearby commercial establishments.
Funding for the Franconia Police Station, including the Franconia District Supervisor’s Office and the Franconia Museum, was approved in the 2015 Public Safety Bond Referendum. Funding for the library, which included the Active Adult Center, was approved in the 2020 Library Bond referendum.
A Facility for All
Jeffrey McKay, Chairman of the Board of Supervisors, believes this project helps strengthen Fairfax County.
“This marks a major milestone for the Franconia community and reflects decades of planning, investment and strong voter support," McKay adds. "This project is especially meaningful to me given my longstanding connection to the Franconia District, having served as Chief of Staff, District Supervisor and now Chairman, and having been able to help shepherd this project through every stage of the process to ensure its completion. I am grateful to the county staff, partners, contractors and community members whose dedication made this vision a reality. This is what it looks like when we invest in our communities and deliver results, and I congratulate the Franconia community on this important new resource.”
Lusk is optimistic about the connections that the new facility will bring to his residents, noting that the center provides services and space for all.
“I look forward to welcoming older adults to enjoy new active spaces designed for them, seeing families drop off their children at our childcare center, and watching residents of all ages visit our new regional library and our outstanding Franconia Museum," Lusk said. "This will truly be a vibrant place that reflects our community and offers something for everyone in all walks of life.”
