Your Guide to Primary Election Day 2026

Published on

Voter at the polls

Highlights

  • Polls are open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 4.
  • The contests on your ballot depend on your congressional district and the party primary you choose to vote in.
  • Confirm your voter registration and polling place before Election Day. Mail-in ballots may be returned at any polling place drop box before 7 p.m.

Where and When to Vote on Election Day

Polling places are open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 4. If you are in line by 7 p.m., you will be able to vote.

On Election Day, you must vote at the polling location for the precinct where you are registered. If you need to register or update your registration, you may complete same-day registration at the polling place for the precinct where you currently live.

Know What's on Your Ballot

Democratic and Republican primary elections are being held to select candidates for federal offices. The contests available depend on your congressional district and the party primary you choose to vote in.

Democratic Primary

  • 8th Congressional District: U.S. House of Representatives
  • 10th and 11th Congressional Districts: No Democratic primary contests for federal office

Republican Primary

  • 8th Congressional District: U.S. Senate
  • 10th Congressional District: U.S. Senate and U.S. House of Representatives
  • 11th Congressional District: U.S. Senate

When more than one party holds a primary on the same day, Virginia voters may vote in only one party's primary. Each primary uses a separate ballot.

Before You Go — Check Your Registration and Polling Place

Before voting, confirm your registration status and polling place. Your voter information card lists the name and address of your polling place.

You can also check your information through the Virginia Department of Elections Citizen Portal or contact the Fairfax County Office of Elections at 703-222-0776 (TTY 711).

Check Your Registration and Polling Place

What to Bring

You will be asked to show identification when you vote. Acceptable forms of identification include a Virginia driver's license, government-issued ID, passport, student ID or employer-issued photo ID.

You may also use a current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck or other government document that includes your name and address. If you do not have an acceptable form of identification, you may sign an ID Confirmation Statement and vote normally.

Same-Day Voter Registration

The regular voter registration deadline has passed, but eligible voters may still register on Election Day.

Same-day registration must be completed at the polling place for the precinct where you currently live. Voters who register on Election Day will cast a provisional ballot, which will be reviewed after the election to confirm eligibility.

Curbside and Accessible Voting

Curbside voting is available for voters age 65 and older and anyone with a disability, illness or injury that prevents them from entering the polling place.

When you arrive, look for the "Curbside Voting" sign near the accessible parking area and call the phone number listed. An election officer will come to your vehicle.

All polling places also offer accessible parking, wheelchair access, magnifying devices and electronic ballot-marking equipment. Voters may read or listen to the ballot in English, Spanish, Vietnamese or Korean. A voter may also designate someone to assist with voting after completing the required form.

Return Your Mail Ballot

Mail ballots may be returned before 7 p.m. on Election Day:

  • At a drop box at any Fairfax County polling place from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • At the secure, 24-hour drop box outside the Fairfax County Government Center.
  • In person at the Office of Elections, Suite 323, Fairfax County Government Center.

If mailing your ballot, it must be postmarked on or before Tuesday, Aug. 4, and received by the Office of Elections by noon on Friday, Aug. 7.

Be sure to complete and sign the return envelope with all required information before returning your ballot. Ballots returned with incomplete envelope information may not be counted.

Requested a Mail Ballot but Want to Vote in Person?

If you received your mail ballot and want to vote in person instead, bring the ballot with you to your polling place to surrender it and vote a regular ballot.

If you do not have the ballot with you or never received it, you may vote a provisional ballot. The Electoral Board will determine whether that ballot can be counted after confirming another ballot was not submitted.
