Fairfax Connector Urges Customers to Be Seen During October's Pedestrian Safety Month

Be Smart. Be Safe. Be Seen.

As evenings get darker earlier during the fall months, there are often rises in pedestrian crashes. Here at Fairfax Connector, we encourage pedestrians, bikers and drivers to make sure to be smart, be safe, and be seen. October's Pedestrian Safety Month is a reminder that everyone no matter what form of travel including driving, biking, walking and rolling can take steps to make sure all are safe as the nights get longer.

Be Safe While Walking

Walking is great for your health, the environment and your community. Stay safe while walking by following these safety rules:

If you need to cross the road to reach a bus stop or other destination, look left and right for the closest place to cross safely. Try to use a crosswalk if available – Drivers may be able to see you better there. Wait for a safe gap in traffic or for all traffic to stop before crossing. Do not attempt to cross the street in front of an approaching vehicle or stopped bus. Never let go of your child’s hand when crossing the street. 
Never expect that a driver sees you. If a vehicle is stopped in front of you, wait to cross until you can make eye contact with the driver. While crossing, make sure to look out for other approaching vehicles in case they won’t stop for you. 
If there is no sidewalk, walk facing traffic and as far from traffic as possible.
Avoid distractions from electronic devices while walking, especially when crossing the road, while walking in a parking lot and near transit centers. Be aware of your surroundings.
Avoid alcohol and drugs when walking; they impair your abilities and your judgment.
Use your phone’s flashlight when walking in the dark to increase your vision and visibility.
