Fairfax ReLeaf has partnered with my office, Amazon and the Arbor Day Foundation for a free tree and shrub seedling distribution at the Mount Vernon Government Center on Friday, April 18 from 3 - 7 p.m. and Saturday, April 19 from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. *(while supplies last)*

The goal of this event is to increase the tree canopy thereby benefiting the environment and community residents through improved air quality, climate change mitigation and enhanced outdoor spaces. Species available will be:

  • Buttonbush is shrub that does well in wet soil with shady to partially shady conditions. It has small, white flowers all summer.
  • Elderberry is a shrub that does well in shade or sun. It has fragrant white flowers in the spring and berries for birds in summer.
  • Red Maple provides year round interest. One of the first trees to leaf out in spring, it also provides a burst of fall color. Preferring a slightly drier site, this species enjoys full sun.
  • Bald Cypress is a conifer that’s needles turn a rich orange in fall. Flourishing in a range of soil types, this species prefers full to partial sun.
