Make a difference in your community - teach bicycle and transportation safetyTransportation Safety Photo

Are you looking to make a positive impact in your community? Do you ride and walk in your neighborhood and think, “I’d like to see more people riding their bicycles and walking safely and happily.” Do you have spare time on Saturdays and Sundays that could be better spent making bicycling better in the region? Then consider applying to become a transportation safety leader and League of American Bicyclists League Certified Instructor (LCI)!

Local bicycling and pedestrian transportation partners are looking for people to teach with Washington Area Bicycling Association (WABA) and other community groups to encourage walking and cycling, while making our roads safer for ALL users. WABA, a leader in LCI training and outreach on safe bicycling, has taught hundreds how to ride and ride more confidently and is bringing its program to Fairfax.  In addition, participants will learn key strategies for educating community members on pedestrian and bicycling safety. Training includes an extra day of pedestrian safety, taught by Arlington County staff. This training is a $500 value, in return for your commitment to hold two pedestrian and bicycling safety outreach events and to support bicycle and pedestrian safety in the community. This seminar will be an intensive, fun and engaging course taught by experts! Click here to learn more and apply League Certified Instructor Training Application or fill out the attached pdf by 11:59 pm FEBRUARY 19, 2018.  We will notify you on acceptance into the training program.  Training requires attendance for all training dates:

March 3 (8-4), snow date March 10

April 6 (5-9)

April 7 (8-8)

April 8 (8-4)

Pedestrian training (required--date to be determined, likely two evening sessions)

One of WABA’s Lead Instructors, Liz, teaches for WABA, and provides one-on-one instruction to many members of her community. Liz shared:

The LCI seminar is, hands down, the hardest I've ever worked to get through a training program but is also the single most valuable professional development course I've ever attended. The things I learned there helped me communicate not only to bicyclists but also helped me communicate better and get more done in my day job. Knowing about how people learn and how to cater to more than one learning style makes every communication more powerful.

This training is part of a federal highway safety project underwritten by DMV grant to the regional planning district, the Northern Virginia Regional Commission. Key partners in this project include WABA, Fairfax Alliance for Better Bicycling, Inova Hospital, Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun County, and the City of Alexandria. For registration questions, contact Jeff Anderson, FABB, at jeff@fabb-bikes.org, for more information on the project, contact Debbie Spiliotopoulos, NVRC at dspilio@novaregion.org.
