We're inviting the Springfield community to help shape the area’s future as we begin a new planning study. With direction from the Board of Supervisors, the Department of Planning and Development launched the Franconia-Springfield Planning Study to update the Comprehensive Plan, the county’s guide for making land use decisions.

Specifically, the study is reviewing the Comprehensive Plan for the Franconia-Springfield Transit Station Area and Springfield Community Business Center, which are both adjacent to I-95. As part of this review, the Board of Supervisors directed staff to consider the recommendations from a 2022 market study for the Franconia-Springfield area. The current plan hasn't been fully reviewed in over 17 years, and this study will create a new vision to guide future changes for the next 20 years or more.

Community involvement will help establish land use, transportation, and other priorities for the future of Springfield:

  • Join the virtual community kickoff meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 7, at 7 p.m. to learn more about the study.
  • Sign-up for email notifications to receive project updates and additional community engagement opportunities, planned through spring 2026.

Community comments, alongside staff analysis, will guide the next steps for the planning study. In addition, land use change proposals are being accepted by email as another consideration during the study’s visioning and analysis phases. Submissions are due by Oct. 24, and must include several elements, as detailed on the study webpage.

Visit the study webpage, to learn more about the study, register for the meeting and sign-up to receive email updates.
