May is Building Safety Month, a time to learn how the places where we live, shop and play are kept safe. This year’s theme, “Built to Last,” highlights the people who make sure homes and buildings are strong, secure and ready for anything.
A Community Friendly Resource Fair
To celebrate, Land Development Services is hosting the first Building Safety Month Resource Fair on Wednesday, May 13, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Herrity Building. The fair will feature hands-on activity tables from LDS and partner agencies, along with snacks, giveaways and prizes. Children can enjoy storytime with a librarian at 11 a.m. and explore large vehicles during Touch-a-Truck all, including a firetruck, flusher truck and an electric trash truck. At 10:30 a.m., Sully District Supervisor Kathy Smith will deliver the official Building Safety Month proclamation.
Free Classes for Homeowners
Homeowners can attend two free classes designed for spring projects. Building Permits 101 begins at 11 a.m., followed by the Deck Details Bootcamp at 12:30 p.m. Both will be held in Room 106. The sessions explain how permits work, why safety rules matter and what to know before starting a project.
Learn More on the “County Conversation” Podcast
Residents who want to learn more can listen to a recent episode of the “County Conversation” podcast featuring LDS engineer Nick Polera. He discusses the importance of building codes and how they help prevent hidden dangers, such as removing a load-bearing wall or upgrading a porch without proper support.
More Ways to Explore Building Safety
Those who cannot attend the fair can visit the LDS website for permit guides, contractor tips and tools to check for unpermitted work.
