Strategic Plan Toolkit
As a champion of this work, you play a key role in sharing our progress with county employees, partners, stakeholders, and the community. When people ask how to track our progress, we point them to the Fairfax County Annual Report. Released with the advertised budget, it is the best single source for updates.
The most important message to convey is that the Strategic Plan is a framework for our work, focusing on four key drivers and organized around 10 “community outcome” areas. Each area has an accompanying dashboard which is filled with relevant, easy-to-understand information that shows our current and past trends.
Please help us by:
- Sharing the report broadly
- Lifting up the key highlights
- Directing people to the dashboards
This information is too valuable to stay on the shelf! Updated materials coming soon!

The Countywide Strategic Plan is all about making Fairfax County work better for everyone by intentionally investing in the areas that our community has identified as being most important. We're using fresh ideas and teamwork to save money, improve processes, and promote and support both economic prosperity and a more equitable county. This plan is already making a big difference by helping us tackle inequalities with new tools and data, so we can support more effective programs and services. With everyone’s help, we will continue to shape a better, stronger, and more equitable Fairfax County together.

The report and the highlights within demonstrate how the county is using a thoughtful approach based on data to improve our quality of life. From enhancing public safety to expanding economic opportunities, the county remains focused on delivering meaningful actions for all residents.
To achieve the goals in the Countywide Strategic Plan, a special committee of county leaders uses an action-focused approach. They create teams of experts from different agencies to come up with new ideas that save money, improve processes, and help make services accessible to anyone eligible.
Before trying out new ideas, the committee evaluates how they will help solve big problems and whether they can be done with the current budget. They also use new tools and data collection to understand what the community needs. These tools show where the county needs to take action and also help community partners create more programs and services. The committee then connects existing projects across agencies and departments to work together better.
The report shows our ongoing effort to work together and make informed decisions to meet the goals laid out in the strategic plan.
