Herndon-Reston Bus Service Review - Approved Service Changes

On Feb. 22, 2022, Fairfax County Board of Supervisors approved Fairfax Connector bus service changes in the Reston-Herndon area that include connections to the new Metrorail Silver Line stations in Fairfax County (Herndon Station, Reston Town Center Station, and Innovation Center Station). These service changes will go into effect when the Washington Metropolitan Transit Authority (WMATA) begins service to the new Metrorail Silver Line stations.

Route 507 will continue to operate on a loop linking Sunset Hills Road and Sunrise Valley Drive to Wiehle-Reston East Metrorail Station and the Northern Virginia Community College Reston Center campus. It will provide weekday service with 25-minute frequency.

Innovation Center Metrorail Station – Wiehle-Reston East Metrorail Station

Improved connectivity 

Route 552 will expand service, connecting several medium-density residential areas in the Reston/Herndon service area with three Metrorail stations. The route will operate with 20-minute frequency during rush hour.

Route 553 will improve connectivity from Fox Mill Road to Reston Town Center and Herndon Metrorail Station south of the Dulles Toll Road. It will link Herndon High School and the Town of Herndon with Herndon Metrorail Station, with 20-minute frequency during rush hour.

Route 599 will continue to provide weekday express commuter service from Reston North Park-and-Ride Lot to the Pentagon and Crystal City, with 25-minute frequency during rush hour.

Route 605 will provide all-day service between Reston and Fair Oaks – Fairfax County Government Center, with a more direct link between Inova Fair Oaks Hospital and Fair Oaks Mall. This will reduce travel time for passengers by as much as 40 percent. The route will operate with 30-minute frequency during weekday rush hour and 45-minute frequency during weekday non rush hour and weekends.

Route 924 will provide all-day service between Northern Virginia Community College Loudoun campus and Franklin Farm Road via Herndon Metrorail Station, with connections to Loudoun County Transit. This will significantly increase access to education and employment opportunities. The route will operate with 20-minute frequency during weekday rush hour and 60-minute frequency during weekday non rush hour and weekends.

Route 937 will operate between Herndon Harbor House and Herndon Metrorail Station. Service will also include Frying Pan Road, Coppermine Road, Innovation Center Metrorail Station, and Elden Street. The route will provide mid-day service on weekdays and all-day service on weekends with 40-minute frequency.

Route 950 will provide all-day service between Herndon Metrorail Station and Reston Town Center Metrorail Station. Service will also include Reston Town Center Transit Station, Reston Hospital and activity centers along Elden Street to Worldgate. The route will operate with frequencies of 15 minutes during weekday rush hour, 20 minutes during weekday non rush hour, and 20-30 minutes during weekends.

Route 951 will operate during rush hour between Wiehle-Reston East Metrorail Station and Innovation Center Metrorail Station. Service will also include Glade Drive, U.S. Geological Survey, and Sunrise Valley Drive. The route will provide connections between commercial and residential areas south of the Dulles Toll Road, with 20-minute frequency during weekday rush hour.

Route 952 will provide all-day service between Wiehle-Reston East Metrorail Station and Dulles Airport. Service will also include activities centers along Sunset Hills, Herndon Metrorail Station, and Worldgate. The route will operate with 20-minute frequency during weekday rush hour and 60-minute frequency during weekday non rush hour and weekends. The current Route 952 operates weekday-only service with 30-minute frequency during rush hour and 40-minute frequency during non rush hour.

Route 983 will provide all-day service between Dulles Airport and Udvar-Hazy Air and Space Museum. Service will also include Innovation Center Metrorail Station and Park Center Road. The route will operate with 25-minute frequency during weekday rush hour and 60-minute frequency during weekday non rush hour and weekends.

RIBS 1 will provide all-day service between the Lake Anne area and Reston Town Center Metrorail Station. The route will operate with 25-minute frequency during weekday rush hour and non rush hour and 20-30-minute frequency on weekends.

The current RIBS 2 and Route 551 will be merged to form a new RIBS 2, operating on a bidirectional basis. The route will provide all-day service between the Wiehle-Reston East Metrorail Station 
and Reston Town Center Transit Station via South Lakes Drive and Sunset Hills Drive. The route will operate with 20-minute frequency during weekday rush hour and 30-minute frequency during 
weekday non rush hour and weekends.

Hunters Woods – Lake Anne

RIBS 3 will provide all-day service between Hunters Woods and Reston Town Center Metrorail Station. The route will operate with 25-minute frequency during weekday rush hour and non rush hour and 20-30 minute frequency on weekends.

RIBS 4 will replace Route 556 and connect with Reston Town Center Metrorail Station. The route will provide all-day service with 20-minute frequency during weekday rush hour and 40-minute frequency during weekday non rush hour and weekends.

Herndon
    

Improved connectivity    

RIBS 5 will provide more direct service between Harbor House and Elden Street shopping centers, while continuing to link to  Reston Town Center Transit Station. North and west of Harbor House, the route will operate in a loop incorporating Herndon Parkway and Park Avenue. The route will operate with 45-minute frequency on weekdays and weekends.

Improved travel time

The section of Route 605 currently operating between Fair Oaks Hospital and Fair Oaks Mall, via Stringfellow Road and Fair Lakes Parkway, will be replaced by the new Route 615. More direct connections with Reston will be available at Fair Oaks  Hospital. Route 615 will provide all-day service with 30-minute frequency during weekday rush hour and 45-minute frequency during weekday non rush hour and weekends. Connection with Route 605 to Reston will be maintained by way of a transfer  point at Fair Oaks Hospital.

Herndon Metrorail Station – Centreville

 
New connectivity and improved travel time The new Route 901 will provide connectivity between the Herndon, Centreville, and Chantilly areas. The route will significantly reduce travel time between these areas, while providing access from residential areas to employment centers. The route will operate all-day service with 30-minute frequency during weekday rush hour and 60-minute frequency during weekday non rush hour and weekends.

New connectivity

Route 921 will operate as a loop through the Town of Herndon, connecting Herndon downtown and historical areas to the Herndon Metrorail Station. Service will also include Parcher Avenue and Spring Street / Van Buren Street area not currently served by public transit. The route will operate with 40-minute frequency on weekdays and weekends.

The new Route 954 will provide all-day service between Sterling Plaza and Herndon Metrorail Station, improving access to employment, shopping, and Loudoun County Transit. Additionally, Route 954 will provide more frequent and regular connections to medium-density and high-density areas  along Herndon Parkway and Crestview Drive not currently served by public transit. The route will operate with 30-minute frequency during weekday rush hour and 60-minute frequency during weekday non rush hour and weekends.
