What We Do

The Department of Finance serves the residents of Fairfax County, its vendors and partners, and agencies throughout the County. The department's five business areas are Financial Control and Compliance, Investing and Cash Flow Management, Accounting and Financial Reporting, Payment of Countywide Obligations, and Risk Management, all of which work together to meet the department's core business functions. These functions include: collecting non-tax revenue; ensuring accurate processing of financial transactions; investing County cash resources prudently and effectively; identifying and mitigating risk of loss of County financial resources; paying countywide obligations; and ensuring timely reporting of financial data to the governing body, rating agencies, and the public.

Annual Comprehensive Financial Report

We are pleased to present the Annual Comprehensive Financial Report of the County of Fairfax, Virginia for the past ten fiscal years. The Annual Comprehensive Financial Report is a thorough, detailed presentation of the County's financial position and activities for the fiscal year. Each year since 1977, the County has been awarded the prestigious Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting by the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA).

POPULAR ANNUAL FINANCIAL REPORT

We are pleased to present to you, our residents, the Popular Annual Financial Report (PAFR) for the County of Fairfax, Virginia, covering the most recent fiscal year that ended June 30. The fiscal year covers the period July 1 - June 30. The PAFR is designed to offer those with a general interest in the County 's financial activities a less detailed glimpse at selected data from the most recent Annual Comprehensive Financial Report presented in a highly readable format.

The County's Investment Policy

The investment policy of the County of Fairfax, Virginia (County) is to invest public funds in a manner which will safely preserve principal, provide adequate liquidity to meet the County’s cash flow needs, and optimize returns while conforming to all federal, state and local statutes governing the investment of public funds.

Financial Transparency

The Fairfax County Financial Transparency portal consolidates links to budget, finance, audit, procurement and human resource information enabling a clear view of the government's operations and how tax dollars are spent. In addition, it provides an interactive transparency application  to browse budget and expenditure data, as well as certain vendor payments for the current fiscal year-to-date (YTD) that begins on July 1.
