On Saturday, Feb. 4, more than 1,000 community members and organizations gathered at the Fairfax County Government Center for an official recognition ceremony hosted by the Health Department and the Board of Supervisors.
“Your organizations played key roles during the worst health crisis of our lives," said Board of Supervisors Chairman Jeffrey C. McKay. “We could not have done it without you. In the case of the pandemic, health was defined by more than COVID tests and vaccines. It was defined by humanity.”
The individuals and organizations were officially recognized for their support and resources over the past three years. Honorees include medical providers, restaurants and other local businesses, residential buildings and communities, faith leaders, non-profit organizations and individual volunteers.
“Together, with you and the organizations you represent, we were able to vaccinate our residents in record time and eliminate barriers to access COVID related services for all within our diverse communities,” said Health Director Dr. Gloria Addo-Ayensu. “Public health is a team sport. And your incredible partnership has left an indelible mark on our department.”
In addition to remarks by Fairfax County and Health Department leadership, attendees enjoyed performances by Sentimiento Peruano USA and Silver Light Seniors Association. Honorees received a commemorative medal and recognition certificate, enjoyed photos with local leaders and a selfie station, refreshments, and a reception. The event was organized by Health Department staff and supported by volunteers from the Medical Reserve Corps.
“I look around today and I am overwhelmed because in this room are people who wear many hats," said Sharon Arndt, Community Health Development, Health Department. "But during this pandemic, you rose and took on an additional role. You became a public health worker, valued because your voice in the community enabled everyone to get access to the services and information they needed to be healthy,”
