THE CHANGING LANDSCAPE OF COLLEGE ATHLETICS

English discussed the impact of Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) rules on college sports. He explained, “For so long, college athletes were considered amateurs, and the NCAA didn’t allow for those amateurs to receive compensation.” Now, with new legislation, “college athletes are paid now. They’re paid well. And I think it’s a good thing.”

The coach also addressed the realignment of college sports conferences, particularly in football. English proposed separating football from other sports to allow for more sensible regional conferences.

“What the Big Ten has done, what these leagues have done is, I think it’s going to be a disservice to Olympic sport athletes that have to travel from Los Angeles to College Park, Maryland, on commercial flights.”

BUILDING A SUCCESSFUL BASKETBALL PROGRAM

English shared his approach to roster management in the era of transfer portals and NIL. He emphasized the importance of player retention and development.

“Player acquisition has always been the lifeblood in college basketball. I think retention is now just as important.”

The coach also discussed his experience leading Providence to the Big East Tournament semifinals at Madison Square Garden, calling it “the mecca of basketball.”

ADVICE FOR YOUNG PEOPLE

When asked about advice for young people, English offered inspiring words:

“Find something you love to do and really go after it. You know, I'd also say you’re never too late. It’s never too late in life to change course and pursue your dream. Go after what you want. I’d say do it unapologetically.”

He also encouraged people to speak up for their beliefs and “try to be on the right side of history.”

REFLECTING ON GEORGE MASON AND PROVIDENCE

English fondly recalled his time at George Mason, highlighting the team’s win over the University of Maryland as a memorable moment. At Providence, he praised the Big East Conference and its tournament as “second to none.”

Throughout the interview, English demonstrated his continued connection to Fairfax County, mentioning local businesses and his ongoing relationships with former players and colleagues.
