With the weather warming up and gas prices soaring, commuters across the county are looking for sustainable alternatives to driving to get around town. Many are turning to bicycling, and the county’s Capital Bikeshare Program is providing bike access to riders without needing to purchase and maintain their own.

Capital Bikeshare offers several purchasing options including a single ride, day pass and annual membership. Riders have access to the entire Capital Bikeshare network serving Northern Virginia, the District of Columbia and Maryland with thousands of classic and electric bikes – or e-bikes – ready for use.

Ridership Trends Show Bikeshare is Practical

In 2025, riders took nearly 40,000 trips on Capital Bikeshare in Fairfax County. Ridership data points to a clear pattern: when stations are close together, on safe routes and near transit, people use them — especially for short, practical trips that might otherwise add one more car to already crowded roads.

Regionally, the system offers bikes at more than 800 stations across Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia, helping people:

  • Commute to work and school
  • Run errands
  • Reach entertainment and leisure destinations
  • Connect with Metrorail, bus routes and other travel options

Everyone Rides with Capital Bikeshare

The Capital Bikeshare for All Program provides discounted memberships for residents who qualify for state or federal assistance programs. For just $5 per year, members receive:

  • Unlimited classic bike rides under 60 minutes
  • Discounted rates on e-bikes
  • A $40 monthly ride credit helps cover ride time for per-minute e-bike rates, per-minute rates for classic bike rides longer than 60 minutes, and out-of-station parking charges for e-bikes.

Bikeshare is Growing Countywide

In August 2025, Fairfax County Bikeshare completed the installation of Capital Bikeshare stations at every Metrorail station in the county – and the program is continuing to expand, including the installation of 27 stations across several areas in spring/summer 2026. Capital Bikeshare will be coming to:

  • Annandale
  • Seven Corners
  • Bailey’s Crossroads
  • Huntington
  • Fort Hunt
  • Belle View
  • Several destinations along the Mount Vernon Trail.

We've also recently announced the potential for up to 17 additional stations to be installed along the I-66 Parallel Trail corridor between Fairfax/Fair Lakes and Dunn Loring. A virtual public meeting has been scheduled for Wednesday, April 8, at 7 p.m. to discuss the proposal.
