The Board of Supervisors declared June as Pride Month in Fairfax County as we celebrate our lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ+) residents. It is also an opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to fostering a community where everyone feels valued, respected and welcomed.

We again earned the top score possible, a grade of 100, on the Human Rights Campaign’s 2025 Municipal Equality Index. The index is a nationwide evaluation of how inclusive local laws, policies and services are for LGBTQ+ people.

Events and Resources

As we celebrate, here are several resources:

Board of Supervisors Proclamation

WHEREAS, across the United States, June is recognized as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, Asexual and Plus Pride Month, a time to recognize the ongoing struggles faced by the LGBTQIA+ community and celebrate their contributions to society and culture; and

WHEREAS, June is observed as Pride Month in recognition of the Stonewall Uprising of 1969, which took place from June 28 to July 3, 1969, and marked a defining moment in the fight for LGBTQIA+ rights in the United States, with the first Pride march held June 28, 1970, commemorating the anniversary of the uprising and beginning a tradition of Pride events that celebrate and advocate for justice and inclusivity; and

WHEREAS, despite significant progress in laws and social attitudes since that first Pride march, LGBTQIA+ individuals, especially transgender youth, continue to face escalating legal and social threats to their privacy, health and safety, as evidenced by the more than 500 anti-LGBTQIA+ bills proposed nationwide, a significant number of which directly target the transgender community; and

WHEREAS, Fairfax County remains committed to protecting the rights of LGBTQIA+ individuals as part of its broader commitment to safeguarding the rights and privacy of all Fairfax County residents by fostering an equitable and inclusive community through its policies and practices; and

WHEREAS, Fairfax County is committed to promoting a culture of openness, inclusiveness and acceptance for all people by continuing to achieve high scores on the Human Rights Campaign Municipal Equality Index;

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, on behalf of all residents of Fairfax County, does hereby proclaim June 2026 as Pride Month and encourages all residents to reflect on equality, celebrate the contributions of the LGBTQIA+ community and work toward a just and inclusive society.
