Reston Snapshots, Fairfax County’s tool for tracking the land use and development trends of Reston’s Transit Station Areas (TSAs), has been updated with new data, including a new Affordable Housing Hub. The GIS-based platform provides the public with a transparent view of transportation, land use, affordable housing, parks and recreation, and zoning data in the TSAs through interactive maps supported by narrative descriptions, tables, graphs and images.

Reston Snapshots features five topic‑focused data hubs:

  • The Affordable Housing Hub makes its debut with a high-level overview of the Comprehensive Plan recommendations and delivery of ADUs and WDUs in the Reston TSAs.
  • The Land Use Hub contains a high-level overview of the Comprehensive Plan vision, potential land uses, existing land uses and entitled development including the addition of a development pipeline within the Reston TSAs.
  • The Transportation Hub presents monitoring reports on vehicular traffic, transit usage, pedestrian activity, bicyclist activity and bikeshare usage; implementation updates on proffered improvements; and capital projects within Reston with a focus on the TSAs.
  • The Urban Parks Hub illustrates the urban park vision, as detailed in the Comprehensive Plan, and shares information on urban parks and athletic fields associated with redevelopment in the Reston TSAs. It features details on proffered and constructed urban parks within the Reston TSAs.
  • The Zoning Activity Hub displays the approved and under review zoning applications within the Reston TSAs. Each listing includes a supporting description, status of the overall application, a list of subsequent/related zoning applications and specific links to the county’s Planning and Land Use System (PLUS).

The goal of Reston Snapshots is to provide data that illustrates how the planning vision for Reston, as detailed in the Comprehensive Plan, is being implemented. The latest TSA data shows the evolution of transit-oriented neighborhoods that feature public spaces, pedestrian activities and connections that are safe, comfortable, engaging and attractive. Periodic updates to Reston Snapshots allow the community to see approved zoning cases, transportation monitoring and implementation activity.

Reston Snapshots is a collaborative effort of the Department of Planning and Development in coordination with the Department of Transportation, the Park Authority and Housing and Community Development.
