Polling places are open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 3. If you are in line by 7 p.m., you will be able to vote.
Where and When to Vote on Election Day
On Election Day, you must vote at the polling location for the precinct where you are registered. If you need to register or update your registration, you may complete same-day registration at the polling place for the precinct where you currently live.
Know What's on Your Ballot
Fairfax County voters will decide federal races and several ballot questions:
- Federal elections: U.S. Senate and U.S. House of Representatives in the 8th, 10th and 11th Congressional Districts.
- Constitutional amendments: Three proposed amendments to the Virginia Constitution addressing reproductive freedom, marriage equality and restoration of voting rights following felony convictions.
- County bond referendums: $180 million for parks and park facilities and $75 million for community health and human services facilities.
- Town of Herndon elections: Mayor and six Town Council members.
The contests and questions on your ballot depend on where you live. Review the county's sample ballots and official explanations of the proposed constitutional amendments and bond questions before voting.
Before You Go — Check Your Registration and Polling Place
Before voting, confirm your registration status and polling place. Your voter information card lists the name and address of your polling place.
You can also check your information through the Virginia Department of Elections Citizen Portal or contact the Fairfax County Office of Elections at 703-222-0776 (TTY 711).

What to Bring
You will be asked to show identification when you vote. Acceptable forms of identification include a Virginia driver's license, government-issued ID, passport, student ID or employer-issued photo ID.
You may also use a current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck or other government document that includes your name and address. If you do not have an acceptable form of identification, you may sign an ID Confirmation Statement and vote normally.
Same-Day Voter Registration
The regular voter registration deadline has passed, but eligible voters may still register on Election Day.
Same-day registration must be completed at the polling place for the precinct where you currently live. Voters who register on Election Day will cast a provisional ballot, which will be reviewed after the election to confirm eligibility.
Curbside and Accessible Voting
Curbside voting is available for voters age 65 and older and anyone with a disability, illness or injury that prevents them from entering the polling place.
When you arrive, look for the "Curbside Voting" sign near the accessible parking area and call the phone number listed. An election officer will come to your vehicle.
All polling places also offer accessible parking, wheelchair access, magnifying devices and electronic ballot-marking equipment. Voters may read or listen to the ballot in English, Spanish, Vietnamese or Korean. A voter may also designate someone to assist with voting after completing the required form.
Return Your Mail Ballot
Mail ballots may be returned before 7 p.m. on Election Day:
- At a drop box at any Fairfax County polling place from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.
- At the secure, 24-hour drop boxes outside the Fairfax County Government Center and inside the North County and Mount Vernon Governmental Centers.
- In person at the Office of Elections, Suite 323, Fairfax County Government Center.
If mailing your ballot, it must be postmarked on or before Tuesday, Nov. 3, and received by the Office of Elections by noon on Friday, Nov. 6.
Be sure to sign and complete the return envelope with all required information. Ballots returned with incomplete voter information may not be counted.
Requested a Mail Ballot but Want to Vote in Person?
If you received your mail ballot and want to vote in person instead, bring it to your polling place to surrender it and vote a regular ballot.
If you do not have the ballot or never received it, you may vote a provisional ballot. The Electoral Board will determine whether it can be counted after confirming another ballot was not submitted.
Election Monitoring at Polling Places
Voters may see authorized representatives and neutral observers, including representatives of political parties, candidates and the federal government, at some polling places on Election Day. The U.S. Department of Justice monitored additional language support during Fairfax County's August primary election and has announced plans for the same during the November election.
Observers must follow applicable rules and may not interfere with voting. Election officers remain responsible for managing polling places and ensuring voters can cast their ballots without disruption. (Learn more about how the county protects your vote)
