Fairfax County is working on a new plan to make it easier for people to get around by walking, biking or using other active modes of transportation.
The Active Fairfax Transportation Plan aims to create a safe, comfortable and connected network for pedestrians and cyclists of all ages and abilities.
During a recent episode of the “County Conversation” podcast, Nicole Wynands, an active transportation planner with the county’s Department of Transportation, discussed the goals and vision behind this ambitious plan.
A SHIFT IN TRANSPORTATION PLANNING
According to Wynands, the Active Fairfax Transportation Plan represents a shift in how we approach transportation planning.
Traditionally, the focus has been on moving vehicles efficiently, but this plan puts pedestrians and cyclists at the forefront.
“We’re really trying to change the way we think about transportation in Fairfax County,” Wynands said. “Instead of just building roads for cars, we want to create a network that makes it safe and convenient for people to walk, bike or use other active modes.”
IMPROVING SAFETY AND ACCESSIBILITY
One of the primary goals of the plan is to improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists. Wynands emphasized the importance of creating dedicated infrastructure, such as sidewalks, bike lanes and multi-use trails, to separate active transportation users from vehicular traffic.
“We want to make sure that people feel safe and comfortable when they’re walking or biking,” she said. “That means providing physical separation from cars and trucks whenever possible.”
The plan also aims to enhance accessibility by ensuring that active transportation facilities are accessible to people of all ages and abilities, including those with disabilities.
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT AND IMPLEMENTATION
We're also actively seeking input from residents, businesses and other stakeholders to help shape the Active Fairfax Transportation Plan. Wynands emphasized the importance of community engagement in ensuring that the plan meets the needs and preferences of the local community.
“We want to hear from everyone who has a stake in this plan,” she said. “Their feedback will help us prioritize projects and ensure that we’re addressing the most pressing needs.”
Once finalized, the plan will be implemented in phases, with priority given to areas with high demand for active transportation facilities and areas that currently lack infrastructure.
By prioritizing active transportation, we aim to create a more sustainable, equitable and livable community for all residents.
