The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors today set advertised rates for the Real Estate Tax and a potential Food and Beverage Tax, as part of the FY 2026 Budget proposal These advertised rates are the maximum allowable, with the potential for actual rates below these ceilings, based on revenue needs and economic conditions.

Board Chairman Jeff McKay clarified that the current motion authorizes the possible implementation of a food and beverage tax with a cap set at 4%. “When we authorize this, we are authorizing the maximum amount that can be implemented,” he stated. “Anything below that number is still permissible. This should not be construed as support for an increase; it is a responsible motion that reflects the information provided by the County Executive. It allows for a full, robust conversation before any vote on the budget.”

FY 2026 Advertised Budget

The FY 2026 Advertised Budget includes a 1.5-cent increase in the real estate tax rate, $60 million in spending reductions, and funding increases for employee compensation, schools and county services. Consideration of a Food and Beverage Tax has also been recommended to help diversify revenue sources.

The public hearing on the proposed food and beverage tax will be held on Tuesday, April 22 , aligning with the regular budget public hearings, which continue through Thursday, April 24.
