Fairfax County, VA – Fairfax County Animal Services (FCAS) will participate in NBCUniversal Local’s 12th annual Clear The Shelters adoption campaign from Aug. 21-23, offering waived adoption fees for all pets. Senior cats and dogs adopted during the event will also receive a $250 care credit to Pender Veterinary Centre, courtesy of Friends of Fairfax County Animal Shelter.
The event comes at a critical moment for FCAS. On Aug. 31, the agency will temporarily close its Michael R. Frey Campus on West Ox Road to undergo major HVAC renovations. The closure is expected to last approximately six months. During this period, FCAS will continue providing sheltering and animal services from its Lorton Campus at 8875 Lorton Road, Lorton, VA 22079.
“Clear The Shelters gives our community a direct opportunity to make a difference for homeless pets at a time when we need them most,” said Reasa Currier, Director of FCAS. “Every adoption creates space and resources for another animal who needs our help. As we prepare for this temporary transition, we hope families will consider opening their homes to a shelter pet.”
The Michael R. Frey Campus, opened in 1975, has long served as Fairfax County’s primary animal shelter and has grown into a modern, community‑focused facility. Today, it operates alongside FCAS’s Lorton Campus, opened in 2023, with both locations providing open‑access sheltering, adoption and reunification services, and community‑based programs.
During Clear The Shelters, FCAS invites the community to visit either campus and meet pets available for adoption. Many animals will be eligible for Adoption Auditions, offering families a short at‑home trial to ensure a good match before finalizing an adoption.
