Cinnabun’s Three-Legged Comeback

When people think of shelter success stories, they often imagine dogs or cats overcoming tough beginnings. But some of our most memorable journeys belong to the smaller pets. They remind us why thoughtful, attentive, and compassionate care matters. Cinnabun’s story is one of those reminders, showing how coordinated care can give even the most vulnerable animals a second chance.

Today, Cinnabun is a cheerful rabbit who zooms around his pen and hops with excitement when he sees his favorite snacks. Just a few months ago, though, his life looked very different.

Cinnabun was living in his adopted home when he injured his back foot during a routine nail trim. The quick was accidentally cut, and the small wound later became infected. For rabbits, hind legs are essential for movement, balance, and supporting most of their weight, so even a minor injury can become serious quickly.

The vet discovered a small open wound on his toe that had already begun to develop into an infection. In rabbits, infections can spread rapidly even when the original injury appears minor, and despite weeks of attentive treatment and monitoring, Cinnabun’s condition did not improve.

When it became clear he needed more advanced care, his adopter made the difficult decision to surrender him to Fairfax County Animal Services so he could receive the treatment he needed. Our team then prepared for the next steps to give him the best chance at recovery.

To save his life, the veterinary staff determined they would need to amputate the infected leg. Amputation is a major surgery for any animal, and rabbits require especially careful handling because of how important their hind legs are to mobility and balance. Still, giving him this chance remained the best path forward.

Cinnabun recovered with remarkable resilience. He underwent surgery at the end of April and surprised everyone with how quickly he adapted to life on three legs. With support from his foster family and attentive post‑surgical care, his confidence returned, and soon he was hopping around independently again.

His foster mom described him best:

“Words cannot adequately describe how sweet and gentlemanly this little rabbit is,” she shared. “He’s adapted to being a tripod really well and pirouettes beautifully on his remaining back leg. He even managed to execute a cute little binky. Anyone looking for a very handsome and well-mannered pocket-sized rabbit who enjoys pets, treats, and cuddles, look no further.”

Before long, Cinnabun captured the heart of a new family and headed home.

His journey is just one example of the many pets who enter our care needing medical attention, time, and patience. Shelters across the country take in thousands of rabbits every year, many arriving with untreated injuries or health conditions. Stories like Cinnabun’s highlight why shelters play such a vital role in helping animals heal and find safe, loving homes. We are proud to contribute to that effort, and even prouder when animals like Cinnabun show what is possible with the right support.
