Fairfax County Animal Services and BISSELL Pet Foundation partner for a three day adoption event aimed at relieving the temporary capacity squeeze.
Fairfax County, VA – With one animal shelter campus temporarily closed and pets arriving daily at the Lorton Campus, Fairfax County Animal Services (FCAS) is asking the community to help make room — and help pets find homes. All adoption fees will be waived Friday, Sept. 25, through Sunday, Sept. 27, at the Lorton Campus as part of BISSELL Pet Foundation’s Empty the Shelters® event.
Nearly 6 million cats and dogs entered shelters nationwide last year, and while 4.2 million found homes, shelters continue to face high capacity. Empty the Shelters helps reduce financial barriers for adopters, and for FCAS, the timing comes as space remains tight and intake continues.
"Our community has always stepped up for animals, and this weekend, every adoption will have an immediate impact," said Reasa Currier, Director of Fairfax County Animal Services. "You’re not just choosing a pet — you’re opening the door for the next one who needs us."
Pets like Two‑Tone show why making room matters. Brindle‑coated with strikingly different colored eyes, Two‑Tone came into care when his family experienced housing instability. He is easygoing, friendly, and ready for a new home. Right now, 20 dogs, over 40 cats, and a handful of small animals are waiting to be adopted.
The event runs all weekend at FCAS’ Lorton Campus. For hours and adoptable pets, visit www.fairfaxcounty.gov/animalservices/adopt. All pets are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped — ready to go home.
