Paws and Read: A Summer Reading Program with Shelter Animals

Looking for a calm, cozy and FUN way for your child to enjoy summer reading? Come read alongside adoptable cats, rabbits, guinea pigs and birds during Paws and Read at the Lorton Campus! Children can work on their reading skills and get through their summer reading lists, while our shelter pets enjoy some quiet company.

Location: Fairfax County Animal Shelter - Lorton Campus
Dates: Tuesdays through Thursdays, July 15 - August 14
Time: noon – 2:00 p.m. (drop in anytime during reading hours - no registration required)

How It Works:

  • For individual families only (not open to groups or camps)
  • Children must be age six or older and accompanied by an adult (maximum of six people per group)
  • Check in at the welcome table to sign in and pick up a Bookmark Reading Pass and a small giveaway (while supplies last)

What To Bring:

  • A book or two to read
  • A towel or mat to sit on

Approved Reading Areas:

  • Cat Adoption Room
  • Small Animal Rooms

Please Note:

  • Dogs are not part of the reading program (no sitting or reading in dog areas)
  • Quiet voices and calm behavior are required
  • Enclosures must remain closed, and cage bars should not be touched
