Pool Operator Requirements

At least one pool operator with a valid certificate must be on the premises while a water recreation facility is operating.

A pool operator must:
  • Be 16 years of age or older.
  • Have passed a pool operator exam within the last three years.
  • Have a valid pool operator certificate.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and be able to take the necessary actions to address aquatic health and safety issues.

Get a Pool Operator Certificate

You can get a pool operator certificate by passing an exam accepted by the Health Department. Formal training is not required to get a certificate, but is recommended.

Find Approved Course and Exam Providers

The Fairfax County Health Department maintains a list of approved pool operator course and exam providers. To be approved, pool operator course and exam providers must apply pdf icon and certify that their course and/or exam adequately covers primary teaching elements outlined in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Model Aquatic Health Code, §6.1 Qualified Operator Training.
