Fairfax County voters who live in the 11th Congressional District will elect a new U.S. Representative in a special election on Tuesday, Sept. 9, to fill the seat previously held by the late Rep. Gerry Connolly.

Before that election, both the Democratic and Republican parties will hold party-run nominating events this week. These are not administered by Fairfax County or the Virginia Department of Elections.

What Voters Need to Know

  • These are party-organized nomination events, sometimes called a canvass or firehouse primary.
  • Voters do not vote at their regular polling places, and county election staff are not involved.
  • Each political party sets its own rules, locations and hours.

Party-Run Nominating Events

Both party-run primaries are organized and operated entirely by the political parties.
