Geographic Information Systems (GIS) help us make smarter, more informed decisions that benefit both residents and businesses. This technology reveals not just where things happen, but how they connect and why they matter through detailed mapping and analysis.
We’re celebrating our efforts on GIS Day on Nov. 19, from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the Fairfax County Government Center. We've been a proud participant in GIS Day since the event's launch.
This year’s theme, “Guiding Fairfax County with GIS,” highlights how geospatial technology shares the way we plan, serve and connect with our community.
County agencies will be on-site at the Government Center to demonstrate and discuss the spatial tools and products that enhance their work, improve business processes, and engage and inform the public.

Adopt a Hydrant Program
The Adopt a Hydrant program improves operational efficiency by ensuring responders can quickly locate and access hydrants during emergencies, especially in winter or overgrown conditions. Adopters pledge to keep hydrants clear year-round, providing vital support to their local fire department.
Our Fire and Rescue Department created a user-friendly web mapping application that allows you to locate and adopt a hydrant in your community.
Opportunities and Challenges for Students with Disabilities: 2023-2024 Fairfax County Youth Survey
This report explores the characteristics and experiences of students with disabilities based on the findings from the 2023-2024 Fairfax County Youth Survey. It aims to foster a deeper understanding among educators, parents, caregivers and community members and inform strategies that promote equitable opportunities and empower youth with disabilities to thrive.
Mapping Emergency Food Resources
This food access resource connects community members to the locations of food distributions throughout Fairfax County. The results can be filtered by several variables, including zip code, items needed and spoken language. Metro routes are also displayed to help plan trips.
Environment & Energy Strategic Plan Dashboard
The Environment & Energy dashboard, published in May 2025, contains eight headline metrics related to greenhouse gas emissions, water pollution reduction in the Chesapeake Bay, flood and flash flood events, temperature, solar installations, electric vehicles, tree canopy and waste diversion.
The dashboard helps evaluate progress toward achieving carbon neutrality through emissions reduction, mitigating the effects of climate change, and creating a cleaner, healthier community for all.
Housing & Neighborhood Livability Strategic Plan Dashboard
The Housing & Neighborhood Livability dashboard, published in April 2025, contains eight headline metrics related to housing costs and inventory, homelessness, the county’s progress toward creating new affordable homes and accessibility to public transit, fresh food locations, mixed-use centers and parks.
The dashboard helps evaluate the progress of ensuring sufficient housing inventory and affordability within the county and access to amenities that enhance neighborhood quality.
