Concealed handgun permits are regulated by the Commonwealth of Virginia and issued by the Circuit Court in each jurisdiction. Those authorized by the court must have a valid permit and photo ID in their possession while carrying a concealed handgun.
Applications are available online and in person at the Fairfax Circuit Court Clerk's Office.
Eligibility
- At least 21 years old
- Have a valid photo ID
- Qualified to possess a firearm
- Proof of handgun competency documentation
- US citizen or non-citizen with lawful permanent resident status

Obtaining One
- Submit a complete application to the Fairfax Circuit Court.
- Pass a background check conducted by the Concealed Weapons Unit that includes, but not limited to:
- Computer checks (VA DMV, National Crime Information Center, etc.)
- Research archives (court documents)
- Investigative reports (previous contact with police)
- Correspondence to and from other jurisdictions
- All Concealed Handgun Permits granted by the court will be mailed to the applicants.
