Advantages of New Voice Technologies over Traditional Voice Technologies
All features provided with traditional telephone services (such as call forwarding, caller ID, etc.) are usually available with the providers telephone services provided by your cable operator or telephone company.
VoIP long distance or international services may cost less. However, there is a cost in the equipment needed to use VoIP and the cost of a broadband connection.
Telephone listings will continue to reside in Verizon’s telephone directory regardless of which service provider you choose. However, number listings for VoIP services provided through the Internet may not be included.
VoIP calls do not only have to be made over fiber optic cable but can be placed over all types of voice transmission media (traditional copper wire, coaxial cable, or fiber optic cable).
Disadvantages of New Voice Technologies over Traditional Voice
Additional telephone equipment may be needed to take advantage of either type of VoIP service
- Provider network congestion may limit some telephone services
- Directory assistance may not be available through VoIP services
- Service migration back to Verizon’s traditional copper wire once Verizon’s FiOS’s service (that uses fiber optic cable) has been connected may not be available.
