Data Dashboards

NEW: CASE OVERVIEW DASHBOARD

On August 1st, 2024, the Office of the Commonwealth's Attorney released the Case Overview Dashboard. This powerful new tool enables members of our community to view detailed breakdowns of the types of cases our office handling, explore demographic information, and learn how many cases our office handles every month.

Metrics We're WatchingImportant statistics pulled from our dashboards. This includes: recommended pre-trial release in 78% of non-violent felony cases and nearly 87% of non-violent misdemeanor cases; the OCWA was successful in 76% of our ESRO to SRO conversion cases in Q1 of 2024; handled over 200 Red Flag Cases; From January 2023 to March 2024, 58% of cases were misdemeanors and 42% were felonies. 76% of cases involved non-violent crimes, while 24% involved violence.

The Commonwealth Attorney's Office takes a holistic approach to our data; working across our team, every day, to identify trends and areas of improvement and act accordingly. Through this process, we've identified several key performance indicators to gauge our successes and shortcomings in reforming our justice system. The most notable are release recommendations, Red Flag case count, Red Flag conversion rates, and felony & misdemeanor breakdowns.

We've made great strides towards bringing these indicators in line with our community's values. Whether it's by providing our Red Flag team with more specific guidance and best practices or through more stringent enforcement of our office's bond policy, these metrics measure our progress as we endeavor to reform both our internal processes and Fairfax County's criminal justice system.

CA Descano's Commitment to Transparency

After taking office in 2020, CA Descano immediately began building a world-class data program — becoming one of few local prosecutor's offices that collects, uses, and publicly releases data on case details and prosecutor decision-making.

Transparency is essential for building trust in the justice system. Community members must feel safe reporting crimes and participating in the legal process, and proactive, consistent transparency is one way to help build trust.

As part of this commitment, our dashboards are living displays that are subject to modification. We commit to updating case information regularly, as well as adding additional views over time.
