About this Dashboard

A flow chart showing how cases move through the criminal justice system

The Case Overview Dashboard includes data, collected by the Fairfax County Office of the Commonwealth Attorney’s (OCA), for adult cases received by our office and handled in the Circuit, General District, and Juvenile Domestic Relations Courts. The dashboards include data on misdemeanor and felony criminal cases only and excludes misdemeanor appeal cases and juvenile delinquency cases (where the defendants are under 18).

This dashboard depicts cases received by prosecutors based on the charges initially filed by law enforcement officers, before prosecutors decide whether to amend, reduce, or bring additional charges on a case. The dashboard does not reflect exact crime statistics, since case dates are determined by the date received by OCA, not the incident date (e.g. cold cases and delayed reports may count in 2023, though the incident occurred years ago).

Many criminal cases have more than one charge associated with a single event (e.g. a person who shoplifts from multiple stores in a mall may face three counts of larceny; an attempted burglary could include trespassing, assault, and unlawful entry charges). Cases are categorized by the top, or first-listed, charge in a case, which is the most serious according to the Virginia Crime Code (VCC).

The data displayed has been collected by an internal case management system. The vast majority of data points have been validated by the Courts’ own websites.

CA Descano's Commitment to Transparency

After taking office in 2020, CA Descano immediately began building a world-class data program — becoming one of few local prosecutor's offices that collects, uses, and publicly releases data on case details and prosecutor decision-making.

Transparency is essential for building trust in the justice system. Community members must feel safe reporting crimes and participating in the legal process, and proactive, consistent transparency is one way to help build trust.

As part of this commitment, the Case Overview Dashboard is a living display that is subject to modification. We commit to updating case information regularly, as well as adding additional views over time.
