CSB VIVA! Program FAQs

The answers to all questions relate to both volunteers and students.

Training requirements vary from role to role, but there are some trainings that are universal regardless of whether you are interested in a volunteer or internship position. All volunteers are required to complete trainings on confidentiality and human rights to develop a solid understanding of our expectations of your service with the CSB. While most trainings are offered online, there will be some mandatory instructor-led trainings that volunteers must complete to serve at the CSB.

Depending on your selected role, there may be specific hours or a set schedule for your volunteer service. All volunteers are asked to commit to a minimum of 100 hours during their time with the CSB.

You must be at least 18 years old to volunteer.

Because of the lengthy nature of the onboarding process, volunteers should expect to begin their assignment 2-3 weeks after they attend orientation. Additionally, students seeking internships should apply 2-4 months in advance of their planned start date for best consideration.

While we appreciate your dedication to support the residents of Fairfax County, every agency is different; therefore, trainings and other requirements must be completed again for a CSB role.

YES! Orientation is a vital part of any service experience. Attending the orientation allows you to:

  • Receive valuable information about the CSB’s programs, policies, and procedures.
  • Truly appreciate the impact they are having on the agency and its clients.
  • Understand your role in fulfilling a greater need for our clients.
  • Gain a better understanding of the critical needs of the community and how those issues are being addressed
  • Feel more connected to the agency, our clients and the community.

Unfortunately, the CSB does not currently offer group volunteering opportunities.

Because of the lengthy nature of our onboarding process, individuals needing less than 100 hours are not eligible to fulfill any community service hours at the CSB. However, if your service hour requirement involves 100 hours or more, you are welcome to apply to become a volunteer!

Because of the lengthy nature of our onboarding process, individuals needing less than 100 hours are not eligible to fulfill any community service hours at the CSB. However, if your service hour requirement involves 100 hours or more, you are welcome to apply for one of our volunteer opportunities. The CSB reserves the right to deny ANY individual in need of court-ordered community service hours the ability to volunteer with the agency based on the nature, type and/or specifics of their offense.

For more options in fulfilling court-ordered community service, check out Volunteer Fairfax's Alternative Community Service program, which places a broad range of court-ordered clients in community service positions.

Visit the Fairfax County volunteer page to review the CSB’s current list of needs. We’re ready to put your compassion into action and have you join our network of incredible volunteers!

Check out our Internship page for details on applying for an internship with the CSB.
