The Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT) is thrilled to announce that it has been awarded $50,591,220 by the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) to purchase new low emission, diesel-electric hybrid buses. This significant investment will enable FCDOT to replace older buses as part of its ongoing fleet replacement plan, improving the efficiency and sustainability of public transportation in Fairfax County.
This funding is part of FTA's broader initiative, which includes approximately $1.5 billion in awards to support 117 projects aimed at enhancing public transportation across 47 states. Fairfax County's project was the only one selected within the Commonwealth of Virginia, highlighting the competitiveness of this funding round. The FTA received 477 eligible project proposals totaling $9 billion in requests, making this achievement a testament to the hard work and dedication of FCDOT staff.
"This grant is a significant step forward for Fairfax County as we continue to work toward a more environmentally sustainable public transportation system and improved service,” said Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Chairman Jeff McKay. “Adding these low emission, diesel-electric hybrid buses to our fleet supports our commitment to our riders and to reducing our carbon footprint."
The new diesel-electric hybrid reducing buses will play a crucial role in emissions and enhancing the quality of public transportation services in Fairfax County. This initiative aligns with the County's broader goals of sustainability and environmental stewardship.
The Board of Supervisors authorized FCDOT to apply for this funding on May 7, 2024, and today's announcement marks a significant milestone in the County's ongoing efforts to modernize its public transportation infrastructure.

Fairfax County on the Road to Zero
FCDOT announced the first batch of battery electric buses in October 2023. The EV bus pilot program included eight buses housed at the West Ox Bus Garage. To support this initiative, four 150 kW dual dispenser chargers were installed, marking the beginning of our journey toward a greener future.
