Recognizing the Impact of Gun Violence on Family Services

(Posted 2022 June)

The Department of Family Services’ mission is strengthening the well-being of our diverse community by protecting and improving the lives of all children, adults, and families through assistance, partnership, advocacy, outreach, and quality services.

Gun violence impacts all segments of the community we serve, and its effects reverberate throughout all of society.

In recognition of Gun Violence Awareness Day in Fairfax County on June 3, 2022, we present some information about the intersection of violence with the work of the DFS. For more information about Fairfax County’s  Resources Available to Help Prevent Gun Violence.

June 3 OA Gun Violence Awareness Day

The Department of Family Services’ Adult and Aging division offers many resources for older adults, adults with disabilities, and caregivers who are challenged by social isolation, chronic diseases and pain.

Since July 2020, Virginia has had a “red flag law” in place to prevent individuals who show signs of being a threat to themselves or others from purchasing, possessing or transporting any kind of firearm.

If you, a loved one, or someone you know needs help, check Fairfax County mental health resources.

The Department of Family Services Domestic and Sexual Violence Services division supports policies to remove firearms from potentially deadly situations. It’s the law: Gun owners in Virginia who have been served a final protective order must surrender their firearms. (We encourage taking it to the Sheriff’s office 703-246-4405). By doing so, victims, their families, and our communities are safer.

To learn more about the intersection of guns and domestic violence, visit Domestic and Sexual Violence Services or call the Domestic and Sexual Violence 24-Hour Hotline at 703-360-7273.

 Gun Violence and children

The Department of Family Services Children, Youth and Families division’s work is centered around keeping children safe and families connected. Preventing gun violence in the home is a part of that mission.

About 3 in 4 children ages 5-14 with gun-owning parents know where firearms are stored and more than 1 in 5 have handled a gun in the home without their parents’ knowledge. If you have a firearm in your home, talk to your children about the risks.

It’s crucial to ensure appropriate Supervision, Safety and Storage to reduce the risk of injury or death. Learn more about the three S’s of gun safety.
