Counseling Boosts Confidence in Longtime Abuse Survivor

(Posted 2026 June)

A 56-year-old woman completed short-term counseling with Domestic and Sexual Violence Services (DSVS) after experiencing domestic violence throughout much of her life. The abuse began in childhood and continued through her 20-year marriage.

Even though she had separated from her husband, they lived in the same house until their divorce was finalized. During that time, his emotional and verbal abuse intensified, including trying to separate her from their children.

Despite these challenges, the woman worked hard in counseling to understand domestic violence, develop tools for healing, and build her self-confidence and resilience. Years of abuse left her feeling unsure, confused, and unable to trust herself. Through counseling, she learned how to challenge negative thoughts, trust her decisions, and recognize her worth.

She also practiced techniques to calm her mind and body, which helped reduce anxiety and increase emotional stability. Counseling helped her gain confidence, stand up for herself, and take better care of her mental and physical health. She shared that she no longer views herself as a victim but instead feels empowered and in control of her life. Today, she feels more prepared to continue her journey of healing and personal growth.
