10 Ways to Respond When Someone Says They’ve Been Sexually Assaulted

(Posted 2021 June)

Sexual violence is a public health epidemic with far-reaching consequences. In this country, nearly 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men will be the victim of sexual violence at some point in their lifetime, which means we all likely know someone who has been sexually assaulted.

It can be difficult to know what to do if someone discloses to you that they’ve been the victim of a sexual assault. But you can be there for someone you know, even if you are not sure exactly what to say.

Here are some helpful responses:

  1. two people talking on truck hoodTell them you believe them.
  2. Assure them they are not to blame.
  3. Let them know you are there for them.
  4. Ask what they need. Cater your support to their needs and concerns.
  5. Give them time to heal.
  6. Respect their privacy.
  7. Do not pressure them to do anything they aren’t ready to do. Say, “You can tell me as little or as much as you want.”
  8. Help them find resources--medical, advocacy or counseling.
  9. Be honest. If you don’t know what to say, it’s OK to say that. Try: “I don’t know what to say, but I’m here for you.”
  10. Say, “I’m sorry this happened to you.”
