Northern Virginia Transportation Guide for People with Disabilities

MetroAccess

The area’s ADA paratransit service that provides shared-ride, door-to-door service that operates during the same hours of operation as corresponding Metrorail and bus service.  

Eligibility: A disability that prevents a person from accessing or using public transportation.

Trip purpose: No restrictions.

Area served: Locations in Fairfax, Arlington, Prince George’s, and Montgomery counties; the District; and the cities of Fairfax, Falls Church, and Alexandria that are located within ¾ mile from a bus or Metrorail line.

How to use: Schedule your ride 1-7 days in advance by calling 301-562-5360, TTY 301-588-7535 or book online.

Cost: Fare is calculated by doubling the fastest comparable route fare on bus and/or Metrorail up to $6.50 each way.

Paratransit
Fastran Critical Medical Care

Transportation to life-sustaining medical treatment, including dialysis, cancer treatment, or rehabilitative services.

Eligibility: Fairfax County residents who need life-sustaining, ongoing medical treatment.

Trip purpose: Critical medical care appointments.

Area served: Locations in Fairfax County, Arlington County, and the city of Alexandria.

How to use: Make a reservation at least 24 hours in advance by calling 703-222-9764, ext. 2, TTY 703-324-7079.

Cost/discount: Sliding scale up to $5.

Logisticare

Transportation for Medicaid recipients to a non-emergency Medicaid-covered service.  

Eligibility: Medicaid recipients who have no other transportation options.

Prerequisites: Must be enrolled in Virginia’s Medicaid program.

Trip purpose: Medicaid-covered service.

Area served: Northern Virginia.

How to use: Call 866-386-8331 at least five business days in advance for a routine appointment. Urgent appointments should be scheduled as soon as possible.  

Cost: Free.

Subsidized Taxi Programs
City Wheels

Subsidized taxicab service for City of Fairfax residents with disabilities who are unable to bus service.

Eligibility: City of Fairfax residents with disabilities who are unable to use CUE Bus.

Trip purpose: No restrictions.

Area served: Locations within City of Fairfax limits and to the Vienna/Fairfax-GMU Metrorail station, George Mason University, and Fair Oaks Hospital.

How to use: Contact participating taxicab companies for reservations.

Cost/discount: $3.20/way

Dial-A-Ride

Subsidized taxicab program for Fairfax County residents who are income eligible.

Eligibility: Fairfax County residents who meet income guidelines of 225% of the U.S. Federal Poverty Guidelines.

Trip purpose: No restrictions.

Area served: Anywhere within the participating taxi companies’ service areas.

How to use: Contact participating taxi companies for reservations.

Cost: Varies by trip.

How to apply: Request an application by calling 703-222-9764 or download an application.

Fare Wheels

Subsidized taxi program that provides $40 per month ($10 co-pay) in taxi coupons.

Eligibility: Residents of the City of Falls Church who are at least 62 years old or have a disability. Annual income cannot exceed $37,000.

Trip purpose: No restrictions.

Area served: Anywhere within the taxi companies’ service areas.

How to use: Contact participating taxi companies for reservations.

Cost/discount: Varies depending on trip.

How to apply: Download application  or call the City of Falls Church Housing and Human Services at 703-248-5005.

Seniors-on-the-Go!

Subsidized taxi program to purchase taxi coupon booklets worth $33 at a cost of $20.

Eligibility: Must be at least 65, a resident of Fairfax County or the City of Fairfax, and have an income of less than $40,000 for an individual and $50,000 for a couple.

Trip purpose: No restrictions.

Area served: Anywhere within the taxi companies’ service areas.

How to use: Call one of the registered taxi companies to make a reservation.

Cost/discount: Varies by distance.

TaxiAccess

Subsidized taxi program for MetroAccess users to purchase taxi coupon booklets worth $33 at a cost of $10. 

Eligibility: Must be a resident of Fairfax County and be a MetroAccess user.

Trip purpose: No restrictions.

Area served: Anywhere within the taxi companies’ service area.

How to use: Call one of the registered taxi companies to make a reservation.

Cost/discount: Varies by distance.  

How to apply: Download an application and submit as instructed or by calling 703-877-5800.

Fare Discounts
Metro Disability ID/SmarTrip Card

Reduced fare on all Metrorail and Metrobus services and local bus systems.

Eligibility: People with disabilities.

Trip purpose: No restrictions.

Area served: All routes on Metrorail , Metrobus, and local bus systems.

How to use: Show the bus operator or station manager your Metro Disability ID card or Reduced Fare SmarTrip card.

Cost/discount: Discount of 50% of regular (rush hour) fare.

Travel Training
ECNV Travel Training

Program teaches people with disabilities to travel safely and independently using public transportation in the Washington metropolitan area.

Eligibility: People with disabilities.

Trip purpose: Through the multi-day program, you will learn a variety of travel skills that will enable you to ride your local transportation independently.

Area served: Northern Virginia.

How to use: Call 703-525-3268, TTY 703-525-3553 to sign up.

Cost: Free.

MetroReady Travel Training 

Teaches people with disabilities and older adults to travel safely and independently using public transportation in the Washington metropolitan area.

Eligibility: Older adults and people with disabilities.

Trip purpose: Customers will learn how to travel safely and independently using public transportation in the Washington metropolitan area.

Area served: Washington metropolitan area.

Public Transit
CUE Bus

Bus service in City of Fairfax that serves George Mason University and other locations within the City of Fairfax, as well as service to the Vienna/Fairfax-GMU Metrorail Station.

Cost: People over 65 or people with disabilities pay half the regularly-priced fare.

Fairfax Connector

Bus system that serves Fairfax County, including the Dulles Corridor and the Reston Internal Bus System (RIBS).

Cost: People over 65 or people with disabilities pay half the regularly-priced fare.

Metrobus

Bus system that serves the Washington metropolitan area.

Metrorail

Rail system that serves the Washington metropolitan area.

Virginia Railway Express

Commuter rail service that runs from Northern Virginia to Washington, DC.

Area served: Washington metropolitan area.

How to apply: Riders with disabilities need a VRE issued Reduced Fare ID or a Medicare Card to purchase discounted tickets.

Car Sharing

Zipcar

Allows members to use cars throughout the Washington, DC area by the hour or day. Zipcar requires seven days' notice from the start time of the reservation in order to reserve a hand-control equipped vehicle.
