Current Health Plans

Fairfax County Government employees who are benefit eligible and qualify for retirement can elect to continue participation in the medical, prescription drug, vision, dental and life insurance benefits as well as the LiveWell Program.

Fairfax County Government (FCG) understands that after your years of service to the County you may wish to spend your retirement elsewhere. If you experience a qualifying event, you must contact the Benefits Division within 30 calendar days of the event to request changes to benefits.

Transparency in Coverage

Under the Transparency in Coverage Rule, issued in 2020 by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, U.S. Department of Labor and U.S. Department of the Treasury and enforced beginning 7/1/22, health plans (which includes clients who sponsor employee benefit plans) and health insurance issuers must publish two separate Machine Readable Files (MRFs).

  • In Network: Negotiated rates for all covered items and services between the plan or issuer and in-network providers
  • Out of Network: Allowed amount paid to, and billed charges from, out-of-network providers for all covered services within a 90-day period

For additional details please visit Cigna's compliance site: https://www.cigna.com/legal/compliance/machine-readable-files

Surviving spouses of deceased retirees may continue health and/or dental insurance coverage until they remarry.  Surviving Spouses are contacted by the Benefits Division upon notification of the retiree’s death. To maintain enrollment in the benefits, Surviving Spouses must complete an election form and review payment options within 30 calendar days of the retiree’s death.

Due to Medicare’s rules regarding retroactive enrollment, Surviving Spouses who are Medicare eligible will need to complete all required paperwork and submit it to the Benefits Division before the last day of the month during which the retiree died. If no action is taken, coverage for a Surviving Spouse will end on the last day of the month in which the retiree died.

If a dependent with coverage dies, please contact the Benefits Division as soon as possible so that premiums can be adjusted. Benefits Change form will be provided to make changes to retiree benefit record. Benefit coverage ends at the end of the month of the dependent’s passing.

The County requires retirees to maintain continuous coverage in Fairfax County Government (FCG) Life, Health and/or Dental plans. After retirement, if you lose any of these coverages, for any reason, there is no opportunity to re-elect that coverage at a later date. Also note that any break in medical coverage with FCG will mean loss of your Retiree Subsidy.  The County allows coverage to be transferred from the active County Government employee group to the retiree group and vice versa. However, transfers to and from the Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) are not allowed for purposes of retaining continuous coverage, as FCPS is a separate employer.
