Winter weather is a part of living in our region. While snow and ice can be beautiful, we also remind our residents to take care and be prepared. To help you, we have compiled the resources available to keep residents informed.
Snow removal for the district and all of Fairfax County is managed by the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), operating under the Commonwealth of Virginia and overseen by the General Assembly.

We hope that you and your community enjoy a safe winter and continue to drive, walk, bike, safely during any inclement weather. Please stay alert to the latest weather and emergency announcements via the Fairfax County Department of Emergency Management Website. Thanks!
Removing Snow and Ice
Here are some important things to know about the Virginia Department of Transportation's (VDOT) removal of snow and ice!
Although storms vary, VDOT will generally start snow removal with the highways and primary roads to ensure access for emergencies and emergency vehicles.
After clearing primary roads, secondary roads and highways are next followed by local streets in individual neighborhoods.
The lines you see on highways and secondary roads are a salt and water mixture. This is done on larger roads to help keep roads clear for the first hour of a precipitation event.
Private complexes such as Condominiums and Apartment Buildings typically contract with vendors to remove snow from the driveways and pathways. Use contact information for your association or management company to ask about about plans to clear paved surfaces within your privately maintained community.
If there are remaining issues such as unplowed public streets after snow removal operations have ceased, residents are welcome to contact VDOT Customer Service. You may either call or enter your detailed information including photos via the website.
Once you have submitted a customer service request to My.VDOT.Virginia.Gov, The Mason District office can follow up with their staff to advocate for a timely response. Simply send an email to Mason@fairfaxcounty.gov with the case number included.
