This year marks the 40th anniversary of the James M. Scott Exceptional Design Awards, celebrating four decades of commitment to design excellence in Fairfax County. Since the program was established in November 1984, more than 300 local projects have been recognized for their dedication to enhancing the visitor experience at each site through innovative architecture and sustainable practices.
The 2024 awards program recognizes nine Honor Award recipients, alongside eight Merit Award recipients and eight Honorable Mentions. Like this year’s award recipients, the award-winning designs of the past 40 years showcase superior works of architecture that enhance the quality of life for those who live, work and play in the county.
From Chantilly to Fort Belvoir and Tysons, the 2024 Honor Award recipients include outstanding architectural works located across the county, representing various types of development. The categories of the award-winning designs include residential, commercial, commercial interiors, institutional and historical/adaptive reuse.
The vision and leadership of the late Providence District Supervisor James M. Scott led to the establishment of the Exceptional Design Awards Program in 1984. The program aims to raise awareness of outstanding planning and design projects among both design professionals and the public.
Sponsored by the Board of Supervisors, the program is administered by the county's Department of Planning and Development in collaboration with the County Architectural Review Board and the Northern Virginia Chapter of the American Institute of Architects. Awards are granted in three categories: Honor, Merit and Honorable Mention, with winners selected by a jury of design professionals, including architects.
