Fairfax County is shining a spotlight on the power of energy efficiency during Energy Efficiency Week, designated this year as Oct. 1-7. While the week offers a set time to rally around sustainability, the benefits of energy efficiency are something that residents, businesses and the community can embrace year-round.

Adopting energy efficiency policies and practices in the county reduces costs, cuts air pollution and helps meet climate goals.

Why Energy Efficiency Matters

Being energy efficient offers numerous benefits for Fairfax County residents, businesses and community:

  • Reduces utility costs by lowering energy consumption.
  • Cuts air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, supporting public health.
  • Creates healthier and more sustainable communities.
  • Drives economic growth by supporting more than 2 million U.S. jobs in industries like manufacturing and construction, most of which cannot be outsourced

Fairfax County’s Leadership in Energy Efficiency

Since 2009, energy efficiency has been central to the county’s Operational Energy Strategy, achieving milestones that benefit both the community and the environment. For example:

  • Constructing 45 LEED-certified buildings, including one Platinum facility
  • Installing rooftop solar panels on 13 county facilities, with more planned in 2026 and beyond
  • Updating HVAC systems with high-efficiency models
  • Reducing electricity consumption by county government operations by 15% since 2018

Supporting Long-Term Climate Goals

Fairfax County’s energy efficiency initiatives are also a critical component of the Community-wide Energy and Climate Action Plan, which set ambitious goals of 50% greenhouse gas emissions reduction by 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.

By leading with energy efficiency, the county helps residents and businesses reduce their environmental impact while improving quality of life.
