The volume of building permit applications increases every spring for “we love to be outside” home improvement projects, such as decks, porches, swimming pools and more.
Keep these five things in mind as you consider your new project:
1. Land Development Services is your go-to county agency for building permits and inspections. Start your research in the Permit Library to discover what record to apply for. (For example, if you are building a deck, you will apply for the residential addition/alteration record).
2. Some home improvement projects will require your house location plat.
3. Make sure you hire a qualified professional to complete your home improvement project. Licensed professionals are the best qualified to ensure your project meets building codes and is safe. They can also save you time and money. Their knowledge of the process and quality workmanship ensures your project passes inspection and doesn't need to be redone. 4. Another way to save time and money is to submit your application with a pre-approved county detail if applicable. Pre-approved details, referred to as “typical details,” don’t require review because they are developed according to current building codes and are pre-approved by the county. A customized, original plan will require review.

5. Although your contractor will apply for the permit and schedule the inspections, Land Development Services recommends all county homeowners become familiar with the Planning and Land Use System. This allows homeowners to view records associated with their address, see the status of their applications and ensure their contact information is accurate.
