FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va - An emergency operation to remove a critical blockage from the county’s wastewater siphon system will begin on Monday, February 17. As a result, Scott’s Run Nature Preserve will be temporarily closed while contractors for the Fairfax County Department of Public Works and Environmental Services (DPWES) perform the work. This infrastructure conveys wastewater across the Potomac River, through Carderock National Park and connects to DC Water’s Potomac Interceptor in Maryland.

To fully access the blockage and perform the necessary work, contractors require access to the Scott’s Run wastewater vaults within Scotts Run Nature Preserve. This emergency work is essential to maintaining uninterrupted service and preventing potential wastewater overflow into the Potomac River.

To ensure public safety and protect natural resources, Scott’s Run Nature Preserve, including the east and west parking areas and all trails, will be closed for the duration of the emergency work beginning Monday. Residents are encouraged to use the Park Authority’s Park Amenity Locator and Trail Buddy to identify alternate parks and trails during this closure. Staff estimate that the work could take up to eight weeks, depending on the extent of the blockage and the prevailing weather conditions during the project window.

Work will take place from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., weather permitting. The public will be notified with the park re-opens.

Updates regarding project progress and any changes to the timeline will be available online at the Scott’s Run Siphon Emergency project webpage.
