Songbirds

Songbirds are a common and familiar sight throughout Fairfax County. Songbirds have a highly developed vocal structure and each species has a unique song pattern. Songbirds include crows, jays, swallows, mockingbirds, thrushes, chickadees and finches.

Virginia’s official state bird is the Northern Cardinal, an easily recognizable species identified by the male’s bright red plumage and distinct call “twit twit twit”.
