4-28: Update on COVID-19 in Fairfax County
To the Fairfax County Community,

I am happy to report that the first day of public hearings on the budget went well. We heard from many including the Chair of the School Board, the Economic Development Authority, local unions, and individual members of the public.

Especially in times like these, it is crucial that the public have the opportunity to engage with their government and elected officials. Before I approved the transition to fully electronic meetings, I made sure to create multiple ways for residents to submit public comments, particularly as we approached the budget hearings. Please, if you haven't, take a moment to review the budget. This budget doesn't accomplish all we had hoped this year, but it's important we respond to the economic challenges and hardships many in our community are facing because of COVID-19. Your input is needed as we craft the best possible FY2021 budget. Be sure to submit testimony soon for review on Wednesday or Thursday. You can learn more here.

I have also asked that, starting tomorrow, the Fairfax County flag fly at half staff at County facilities in honor of the residents who have died of COVID-19 and in recognition of the many essential workers who are responding to the pandemic.

4-26: Update on COVID-19 in Fairfax County
To the Fairfax County Community,

The world has changed a lot in the last few weeks because of COVID-19 and much more will likely change in the weeks and months ahead.

I wanted to take note of the important changes that have happened in Virginia's capital. Governor Northam and the General Assembly passed historic legislation this year. In the coming newsletters, I wanted to provide an overview of some of the bills that passed and what they mean for Fairfax County.

4-24: Update on COVID-19 in Fairfax County
To the Fairfax County Community,

I want to start by wishing a happy and peaceful Ramadan to all observing. I hope the first day of fasting has been a speedy one.

I understand it becomes more difficult to fight the urge to go out each week this pandemic goes on. I want to reiterate as I have done in the past the importance of finding alternative ways to observe the holiday.

I'm excited to announce that at my urging the Health Department is now publishing a brand new information dashboard to better help visualize COVID-19 in Fairfax County.

4-22: Update on COVID-19 in Fairfax County
To the Fairfax County Community,

In April 1970, 20 million Americans participated in the first Earth Day to call attention to environmental degradation and to insist on a better future for people and the planet. As a result of this monumental movement, many landmark environmental policies in the United States, including the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act, and the Endangered Species Act, were enacted.

Our plans for 2020 have shifted because of COVID-19, but the priorities of Fairfax County remain the same, including our commitment to fighting climate change and reducing greenhouse gases.

That's why we launched the Office of Environmental and Energy Coordination last year. We continue to move forward with the Fairfax County Community-wide Energy and Climate Action Plan. This will create a greenhouse gas inventory, emission reduction goals, and strategies for the community.

During this time, we need to be grateful for clean air, clean water, and green spaces. Fairfax County alone has over 200 miles of trails. Learn how you can take action on Earth Day and every day here.

4-20: Update on COVID-19 in Fairfax County
To the Fairfax County Community,

Today, The Hill published an op-ed that I wrote with the US Public Interest Research Group urging the federal government to more effectively coordinate and communicate about its medical supply chain. In these unprecedented times, the federal government needs to make sure states and local governments are working together, not competing against one another. Read the piece here.

Also, Fairfax County successfully applied for funding allocated by the CARES Act. Although it will not solve all of our funding needs, it's an important start.

4-18: Update on COVID-19 in Fairfax County
To the Fairfax County Community,

For parents of FCPS students, I know this has been a frustrating week. The transition to fully digital learning evidently did not go as planned. As a parent and a County leader, I understand your concerns. I have spoken with members of the School Board, they are committed to getting distance learning back up an running and making sure that Fairfax County students have a meaningful curriculum and educational experience the remainder of this school year.

FCPS hopes with upgrades that distance learning will be back on Monday. Until then, FCPS is asking families to make Google Chrome their default browser for the best experience with Blackboard going into next week.

4-16: Update on COVID-19 in Fairfax County
To the Fairfax County Community,

Facts matter. Unfortunately there is still a significant amount of misinformation around the facts of this virus. The County launched a myth and rumor control page to make sure you have the correct information about COVID-19.

Also, I have gone back to answer many more questions from Tuesday's Twitter Q&A. Even without a Twitter account, you can read the answers here.

The Board also met electronically for the first time (you can see a photo of the meeting below). It went well and I thank our hard working staff who put this together.

For those celebrating, I hope you are having a happy Easter. Regardless, I hope everyone is having a relaxing weekend and using the time to connect with family and friends virtually.

I also wanted to share, on Tuesday, April 14 from 10-11 am, I will be taking your questions in a live Twitter Q&A. Please tweet your questions with the hashtag #askChairMcKay. 4-10: Update on COVID-19 in Fairfax County
To the Fairfax County Community,

I have been hearing about a noticeable amount of used gloves, masks, and wipes discarded onto the ground throughout the community. Please remember to dispose of these materials correctly and help us communicate that improper disposal is a public health hazard for your neighbors and our waste collection workers that must clean them up. Another concern is that these items get washed into the waterways and into the Chesapeake Bay.

Also, below you can view a short clip from the Northern Virginia Regional Commission. I was happy to participate in their message about COVID-19 with my partner mayors and chairs from area local governments. I participate in several calls a week with these elected officials and its important we work closely together and think regionally as we tackle the pandemic.
