ELECTION OFFICER TRAINING CLASSES▲
The following training classes are for Election Officers working at one of Fairfax County's 264 precincts on Election Day. Please visit
Central Absentee Precinct (CAP) Election Officer Training Information if you are a CAP Election Officer who will be working at the Fairfax County Government Center.
All new and returning Election Officers must complete state-mandated training each appointment term before they are eligible to serve. Appointment terms are generally two years; the current term began in early 2023. Additionally, all Chiefs and Assistant Chiefs must complete a Chiefs Briefing before each election. All training requests require an
Election Officer Portal account (see registration section).
Please note that classes reflected on this page may change at any time and do not supersede the list found on your Election Officer Portal account. Please use your Election Officer Portal account for the most up-to-date information.
ELECTION OFFICER BASICS
Required for all new and returning Election Officers who have not completed state-mandated training during the current appointment term. Classes run approximately 3 hours.
CHIEF & ASSISTANT CHIEF BASICS
Optional training for long-time officers or those curious about becoming an Assistant Chief or Chief. This training does not guarantee placement as an Assistant Chief or Chief, does not satisfy the two-year Election Officer training requirement, and does not replace the pre-election Chiefs Briefing. Classes run approximately 3.5 hours.
CHIEFS BRIEFING
All Chiefs and Assistant Chiefs must complete a pre-election briefing before each election. Only those serving as Chief or Assistant Chief may participate. Classes run approximately 2 hours.
In addition to the briefing, Chief Election Officers and Assistant Chief Election Officers must schedule a time to be sworn in and pick up their Election Day supplies before each election.
EQUIPMENT PRACTICE SESSION
Equipment Practice Sessions are open house-style events for all officers where we will have trainers, Poll Pads, ExpressVotes, and DS200s available for you. You may stop by for 5 minutes or 50 minutes and we will be happy to answer all of your questions! You can also spend as much time as you'd like getting familiar with the equipment.
